GBP Setup & Verification
SOP: Google Business Profile Setup & Verification
Section titled “SOP: Google Business Profile Setup & Verification”Version: 1.0 Last Updated: March 26, 2026 Author: SEO Operations Team Status: Active
Purpose & Overview
Section titled “Purpose & Overview”This SOP establishes the standardized process for creating and verifying Google Business Profile (GBP) listings for Tekton Growth clients. A properly configured GBP listing is the foundation for all local SEO work, including review management, local rank tracking, and citation building. This document covers the complete journey from profile creation through successful verification and initial setup in Search Atlas.
Key Objective: Ensure every client has a correctly configured, verified GBP listing that complies with Google’s guidelines and is optimized for local search visibility.
When to Use This SOP
Section titled “When to Use This SOP”Trigger Conditions (Use This SOP When):
- Setting up a new client with no GBP presence
- Creating a new GBP for an additional business location
- Re-creating a GBP after suspension or deletion
- Migrating ownership of an existing GBP to Tekton Growth
- Establishing a storefront vs. service area business profile
Do NOT Use This SOP For:
- Managing existing verified profiles (see
sop-gbp-optimization.md) - Publishing to GBP (see
sop-gbp-52-week-posting-plan.md) - Review management workflows (see
sop-review-management.md)
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”Before starting GBP setup, ensure the following:
Required Information
Section titled “Required Information”- Business name (exact legal name or customer-facing name)
- Full business address (for storefronts) OR service area ZIP codes (for SAB)
- Primary business phone number
- Official website URL
- Business hours (if applicable)
- Business category(ies)
- Google Account with owner/admin email verified
- Access to business phone/email for verification
Account Access
Section titled “Account Access”- Google account created for client or verified access granted
- Email account monitored (for verification emails)
- Phone line accessible (for phone verification)
Pre-Setup Decisions
Section titled “Pre-Setup Decisions”- GBP type decided: Service Area Business (SAB) or Storefront
- NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency check completed with client
- Duplicate GBP listings investigated and noted (if applicable)
Part 1: Determining GBP Type (SAB vs. Storefront)
Section titled “Part 1: Determining GBP Type (SAB vs. Storefront)”The profile type fundamentally changes how your GBP appears in Google Maps and Search. Choose carefully before creation.
Service Area Business (SAB) Profile
Section titled “Service Area Business (SAB) Profile”Use SAB When:
- Business serves customers at their locations (plumber, electrician, HVAC contractor)
- No physical storefront or office clients visit
- Service area spans multiple cities/ZIP codes
- Business wants to hide exact address from public view
- Multiple service area locations from one central office
SAB Characteristics:
- Address is HIDDEN in Google Maps search results
- Business appears in search results across all service area ZIP codes
- Display address shows “Service Area” instead of street address
- Client reviews may note location if service was at customer site
- Optimal for contractual/appointment-based services
Example SABs: Plumbing services, house cleaning, pest control, HVAC repair, appliance repair, tutoring
Storefront Profile
Section titled “Storefront Profile”Use Storefront When:
- Customers physically visit the location
- Office/retail/salon/restaurant with walk-in traffic
- Business has a fixed, visible address customers need
- Service area is local/city-level, not regional
- Appointment-based BUT customers visit the physical location
Storefront Characteristics:
- Address is VISIBLE and prominent in Google Maps
- Business shows exact location on map with pinpoint accuracy
- Customers can see hours, driving directions, distance
- Critical for foot traffic and local visibility
- Optimal for retail, food service, professional offices, salons
Example Storefronts: Restaurants, salons/spas, medical offices, law offices, car dealerships, retail stores
Decision Matrix
Section titled “Decision Matrix”| Factor | Use SAB | Use Storefront |
|---|---|---|
| Customers visit location | No | Yes |
| Multiple service areas | Yes | No |
| Address hidden preferred | Yes | No |
| Street-level visibility important | No | Yes |
| Covers multi-city region | Yes | No |
Making the Decision
Section titled “Making the Decision”- Ask the client: “Do your customers physically come to your location, or do you travel to theirs?”
- Ask about scale: “What geographic area do you service?”
- Document the decision: Note in client file: “GBP Type: [SAB / Storefront]“
Part 2: Creating the GBP Listing
Section titled “Part 2: Creating the GBP Listing”Step 1: Access Google Business Profile Manager
Section titled “Step 1: Access Google Business Profile Manager”- Go to
google.com/business - Click “Manage your business on Google” or sign in to existing Google Account
- If multiple businesses appear, verify you’re creating a NEW profile
- Click “Create business” / “Add business” (or equivalent button)
Step 2: Enter Basic Business Information
Section titled “Step 2: Enter Basic Business Information”-
Enter Business Name
- Use exact business legal name OR customer-facing name (client should decide)
- Avoid adding keywords, service descriptions, or location in name
- Examples: ✅ “Joe’s Plumbing” | ❌ “Joe’s Plumbing & HVAC Services - Denver”
- Note: Name cannot be changed for 3 months after verification
-
Enter Service/Business Category
- Click category field and search primary category
- Google will suggest related categories
- Select PRIMARY category most accurate for business
- Secondary categories added later during profile optimization
- Use exact Google category names (not custom descriptions)
- Examples: “Plumber,” “Electrician,” “Accountant,” “Restaurant”
-
Select Address Type (This is critical—cannot be changed later)
For Storefront:
- Select “Add Your Business Location”
- Enter full street address
- Complete address verification with: Street, City, State, ZIP, Country
- Use client’s official business address
- Do NOT use P.O. Box (Google will reject)
- Do NOT use virtual office address (major suspension risk)
For Service Area Business (SAB):
- Select “I serve customers at their location” (not “Add Your Business Location”)
- Choose “Don’t display my business address”
- Enter one address (this is the office/registration address, hidden from public)
- Then add service areas by ZIP codes (minimum 1 required)
- List all ZIP codes where business actively serves customers
- Multi-location SABs can later expand service areas
Step 3: Add Contact Information
Section titled “Step 3: Add Contact Information”-
Phone Number
- Enter primary business phone
- Must be business line (not personal mobile)
- Ensure this line is monitored
- Google may call to verify
- Note: Phone is public-facing and must match NAP elsewhere
-
Website URL
- Enter official website domain
- Must be HTTPS and accessible
- Google may crawl site for verification signals
- Ensure website exists before GBP creation (if possible)
- Website should contain business name and contact info for verification
-
Email Address
- This is for GBP notifications, not display
- Use email that team checks regularly
- Google sends verification codes and important notices here
- Should be accessible by person managing GBP
Step 4: Review & Submit Creation Form
Section titled “Step 4: Review & Submit Creation Form”- Review all information entered
- Confirm no typos in business name, phone, address
- Verify address matches client’s official records
- Ensure phone number is correct
- Click “Create business” or equivalent
- Note: GBP is now created but NOT verified
At this point, the GBP listing exists but is unverified and not fully visible in search results.
Part 3: Verification Methods & Strategies
Section titled “Part 3: Verification Methods & Strategies”Verification proves you own/manage the business. Unverified profiles have limited visibility and functionality. Choose the fastest method available for your situation.
Verification Method Overview & Hierarchy
Section titled “Verification Method Overview & Hierarchy”| Method | Timeline | Success Rate | Who Can Use | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instant Verification | Immediate | High | Google Ads account | Active Google Ads account + website |

| Email Verification | 5 min - 24 hours | High | All | Email access |
| Video Verification | 1-3 days | Medium-High | Limited | Face + ID + Business doc |
| Postcard Verification | 5-10 business days | High (slow) | All | Address match + physical mail |
| Bulk Verification | Varies | All agencies | Agencies | Multiple GBPs + special access |
Method 1: Instant Verification (Fastest - If Eligible)
Section titled “Method 1: Instant Verification (Fastest - If Eligible)”When to Use: Client has active Google Ads account OR owns the website domain
Steps:
- In GBP Manager, look for “Verify Now” button
- Select “Verify using Google Search Console” or “Google Ads” option
- If you have Search Console for the domain:
- Click verify
- System auto-confirms ownership
- Profile becomes verified IMMEDIATELY
- If using Google Ads:
- Link Google Ads account
- Verification completes within minutes if Ads account is active
- Must have active/spending Ads account (not paused)
Success Tips:
- Requires website ownership verification (Google checks domain)
- Domain in GBP must match GSC/Ads verification domain
- Fastest method: typically instant to 5 minutes
Method 2: Phone Verification (Recommended as Primary)
Section titled “Method 2: Phone Verification (Recommended as Primary)”When to Use: You have access to business phone; want fastest reliable method
Steps:
- Select “Phone” verification option in GBP Manager
- Enter business phone number (should match NAP)
- Google calls the number with automated verification code
- Answer and listen for 5-6 digit code
- Return to GBP Manager and enter code
- Profile verified IMMEDIATELY upon code entry
- Verification complete, GBP becomes fully visible
Timing: 5 minutes - 1 hour (depending on phone answer)
Success Tips:
- Answer calls promptly; code expires quickly
- If you miss call, you can request callback
- Have pen/paper ready for code
- Ensure business phone is active/monitored during setup
- Staff should know GBP verification is happening (don’t ignore call)
- If call goes to voicemail, you’ll receive code via text/voicemail
- If missed, request new verification code (can try multiple times)
Method 3: Email Verification
Section titled “Method 3: Email Verification”When to Use: Phone verification not possible; quick option needed
Steps:
- Select “Email” verification option
- Enter business email or GBP associated email
- Google sends verification email with link/code
- Open email and click link or enter code in GBP Manager
- Profile verified immediately
Timing: Immediate to 24 hours (depending on email delivery)
Success Tips:

- If email doesn’t arrive, request resend (after 5+ minutes)
- Link in email expires after 7 days
- Ensure email is checked during verification window
Method 4: Video Verification
Section titled “Method 4: Video Verification”When to Use: Other methods not available; need alternative verification; profile highly restricted
Steps:
- Select “Video Verification” option
- Prepare: personal ID + business ownership document + video camera/phone
- Record short video showing:
- Your face/identity (government ID shown)
- Business document (license, deed, lease, bill proving ownership)
- Clear statement: “I am verifying ownership of [Business Name] for Google Business Profile”
- Business location (if storefront; interior/exterior photo)
- Upload video to GBP Manager
- Google reviews (typically 1-3 business days)
- Approval notification sent via email
Timing: 1-3 business days
Success Tips:
- Video must show face clearly
- Business document must be legible
- Ownership document crucial (business license, tax document, utility bill, lease, deed)
- Lighting must be clear
- Audio must be understandable
- Keep video under 5 minutes
- Have backup documents ready if video rejected
Method 5: Postcard Verification (Slowest but Most Reliable)
Section titled “Method 5: Postcard Verification (Slowest but Most Reliable)”When to Use: Phone/email not accessible; other methods failed; can wait 5-10 business days
Steps:
- Select “Postcard” verification
- Google mails postcard with code to business address
- Watch mailbox for postcard (typically 5-10 business days)
- When postcard arrives, open and note 5-digit code
- Return to GBP Manager and enter code under “Verify with Postcard”
- Profile verified immediately upon code entry
Timing: 5-10 business days (mail delivery dependent)
Success Tips:
- Ensure address on GBP is correct (postcard mails there)
- Watch mail carefully; postcard can look like junk mail
- If address receives mail, this method always works
- If postcard doesn’t arrive after 10 days, request resend (can request 3x)
- Provide client heads-up that postcard is coming
- Document expected arrival date in client file
Method 6: Bulk Verification (For Agencies Managing Multiple Locations)
Section titled “Method 6: Bulk Verification (For Agencies Managing Multiple Locations)”When to Use: Managing 5+ profiles for same client or managing multi-location networks
Steps:
- Contact Google Business Profile support for bulk verification eligibility
- Provide list of profiles needing verification
- Google may offer expedited verification pathway
- Follow specific requirements (may vary by case)
Timing: Varies; typically 5-15 business days
Success Tips:
- Bulk verification usually requires agency partnership status
- Request through official GBP support channel
- Provide documentation of authorization for all locations
- Keep detailed records of verification status for each location
Verification Strategy Recommendation
Section titled “Verification Strategy Recommendation”Preferred order for fastest success:
- First attempt: Instant Verification (if website owned)
- Second attempt: Phone Verification (fastest if accessible)
- Fallback: Email Verification (if phone not available)
- Last resort: Postcard Verification (reliable but slow)
- Special case: Video Verification (if address issues or restrictions)
For Tekton Growth workflow:
- Always start with phone verification as primary method
- Have postcard backup for problematic addresses
- Document verification method and date in client file
- Track verification timeline in project management system
Part 4: Initial Profile Configuration
Section titled “Part 4: Initial Profile Configuration”Once GBP is verified, complete the initial setup. Many of these fields are optimized later (see sop-gbp-optimization.md), but set foundational elements now.

Step 6: Photos (Placeholder Setup)
Section titled “Step 6: Photos (Placeholder Setup)”Add Placeholder Photos:
- Click “Photos” section
- Upload at least 1-2 professional photos:
- Business exterior (storefront) or team/work photo (SAB)

- These improve search relevance
Step 8: Business Type & Payment Options
Section titled “Step 8: Business Type & Payment Options”Set Payment Methods (If Applicable):
- Click “Payments” section
- Check accepted payment types: Cash, Card, Mobile Payment, etc.
- Be accurate (don’t claim payment method not accepted)
Set Additional Business Info:
- Check any other relevant toggles/attributes
- Confirm accuracy of all information entered
Part 5: NAP Consistency & Verification Across Web
Section titled “Part 5: NAP Consistency & Verification Across Web”Before moving to Search Atlas management, ensure NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency across all web presence.
What is NAP?
Section titled “What is NAP?”NAP = Name, Address, Phone
These three data points must be IDENTICAL everywhere they appear online:
- GBP listing (now set)
- Website (footer, contact page, about page)
- Citations (BrightLocal)
- Review sites (Yelp, Google, Trustpilot, industry-specific)
- Social media profiles
- Online directories
- Business registration sites
NAP Consistency Checklist
Section titled “NAP Consistency Checklist”Complete before moving to Search Atlas:
-
Business Name
- Exactly matches GBP listing name
- Confirmed in client’s official business registration
- Same across website, citations, directories
- No abbreviations in some places, full name in others
-
Address
- Exactly matches GBP listing address
- For storefronts: Street, City, State, ZIP all identical everywhere
- For SAB: Hidden in GBP but service areas set correctly
- No alternate addresses listed
- Spelling/abbreviations consistent (St. vs Street, Ave vs Avenue)
- ZIP code never varies
-
Phone Number
- Exactly matches GBP listing phone
- Formatting consistent: (123) 456-7890 vs 123-456-7890 vs 1234567890
- Active and monitored line
- No alternate phone numbers listed elsewhere (confuses Google)
How to Check NAP Consistency
Section titled “How to Check NAP Consistency”-
Website Review:
- Check header, footer, contact page, about page
- Verify name, address, phone matches GBP exactly
-
Citation Check (Using BrightLocal):
- Later step in citation building SOP
- BrightLocal identifies NAP inconsistencies across citations
- Must fix before moving forward
-
Google Search Check:
- Search “[Business Name] [City]” in Google
- Verify knowledge panel shows correct NAP
- If inconsistencies appear, they’ll be visible here
-
Directory Spot Check:
- Check Yelp, Apple Maps, Facebook
- Spot-check 3-5 major directories for NAP accuracy
- Note any discrepancies found
Common NAP Errors to Avoid
Section titled “Common NAP Errors to Avoid”| Error | Impact | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Address abbreviation mismatch | Duplicate listings | ”123 Main Street” vs “123 Main St” |
| Phone formatting inconsistent | Partial NAP recognition | ”(555) 123-4567” vs “555-123-4567” |
| Business name variation | Duplicate profiles risk | ”Joe’s Plumbing” vs “Joe’s Plumbing Inc” |
| ZIP code inconsistency | Google confusion | ”80202” vs “80202-1234” |
| Spaces/punctuation | Harder to match | ”Main Street” vs “Mainstreet” |
| Extra digits on phone | Verification failures | ”+1 (555) 123-4567” vs “555-123-4567” |
NAP Consistency Document
Section titled “NAP Consistency Document”Create/maintain in client file:
CLIENT: [Business Name]Verified NAP (Use This Format Everywhere):- Name: [Exact Name]- Address: [Complete Address]- Phone: [Number with Format]
Do NOT use variations of above anywhere online.Approved alternate names (if any): [List]Part 6: Connecting to Search Atlas & Ongoing Management Setup

Next Steps:- Schedule optimization (see sop-gbp-optimization.md)- Begin 52-week posting plan (see sop-gbp-52-week-posting-plan.md)- Set up review management (see sop-review-management.md)Part 7: Common Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them
Section titled “Part 7: Common Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them”Pitfall 1: Duplicate GBP Listings
Section titled “Pitfall 1: Duplicate GBP Listings”What Happens:
- Multiple GBP profiles exist for same business
- Google confused about which is official
- Rank/visibility split between profiles
- Conflicting information creates trust issues
How to Avoid:
- Search business name on Google Maps BEFORE creating GBP
- Check “[Business Name] [City]” in Google Search
- If duplicate exists, request to merge it (not create new)
- Claim existing profile instead of creating new
- Use Search Atlas to identify existing profiles before setup
If Duplicate Found:
- Document both profiles’ names and IDs
- Claim the profile with most complete information
- Use “Merge duplicates” in GBP Manager if option available
- Request removal of old profile from Google if merge not available
- Report all duplicates to Google through support
Pitfall 2: Address-Related Suspensions
Section titled “Pitfall 2: Address-Related Suspensions”What Triggers Suspension:
- Virtual office address (Google detects and flags)
- P.O. Box used as business address
- Address that doesn’t exist/can’t be verified
- Address frequently used by multiple businesses (red flag)
- Address doesn’t match website/business registration
How to Avoid:
- Use only physical, verifiable business addresses
- Verify address matches business registration documents
- Check that address isn’t shared by dozens of other businesses
- For SAB, use actual office/operation location (not virtual)
- Never use UPS store, virtual office company, or mail forwarding service
If Suspension Occurs:
- Don’t panic; suspensions can be appealed
- Review Google’s suspension notice for specific reason
- Address the issue (update to real address, fix discrepancy)
- Submit appeal through GBP Manager
- Contact Google support if automated appeal fails
- May take 3-5 days for reinstatement
Pitfall 3: Business Name Errors
Section titled “Pitfall 3: Business Name Errors”What Goes Wrong:
- Name includes service area (“John’s Plumbing - Denver”)
- Name includes keywords (“Expert Local Plumber”)
- Name is abbreviation of legal name
- Name changes frequently (locked 3 months after verification)
- Nickname vs. registered name mismatch
How to Avoid:
- Use exact business legal name or consistent customer-facing name
- Confirm name matches business registration/license
- Avoid keywords, locations, descriptors in name field
- Lock in name carefully before verification
- If name must change, use “Do Business As” name (DBA)
If Name Error:
- If within 3 months: Can edit name once (then locked 3 months again)
- After 3 months: Can request change through support (may require verification)
- Provide legal documentation if challenged
Pitfall 4: Phone Number Problems
Section titled “Pitfall 4: Phone Number Problems”What Goes Wrong:
- Phone is personal number (not business line)
- Phone disconnects/changes without GBP update
- Phone is automated service, not business line
- Multiple conflicting phone numbers listed
- Phone sends calls to wrong department
How to Avoid:
- Use dedicated business phone line
- Ensure phone is actively monitored
- Maintain phone number continuity (don’t disconnect)
- Use main business line, not department-specific
- Test calling the number before putting in GBP
- Ensure person answering knows to expect GBP verification calls
If Phone Problem:
- Update phone number in GBP Manager immediately
- If changed, ensure old number removed from other listings
- Verify new number in NAP consistency check
- Re-verify GBP with new phone if Google requires
Pitfall 5: Website & URL Issues
Section titled “Pitfall 5: Website & URL Issues”What Causes Problems:
- Website URL not live/accessible
- Website HTTPS broken or expired
- Website doesn’t contain business name/phone/address
- Domain mismatch with legal business name
- Website loads slowly (verification may timeout)
How to Avoid:
- Ensure website is live and HTTPS before GBP creation
- Website should include NAP in footer
- Test website load time
- Website should be actual business site (not landing page)
- Avoid redirect chains that delay loading
- Website should match business name/branding
If Website Issue:
- Update URL in GBP if incorrect
- Fix HTTPS/SSL certificate if broken
- Add NAP to website footer if missing
- If URL changes, update GBP and re-verify
Pitfall 6: Category Mistakes
Section titled “Pitfall 6: Category Mistakes”What Goes Wrong:
- Wrong primary category selected
- Secondary categories unrelated to business
- Custom category entered instead of Google official
- Multiple conflicting categories
- Too many secondary categories (diminishes relevance)
How to Avoid:
- Use only official Google category names
- Select primary category most customers would search for
- Limit secondary categories to 2-3 most relevant
- Verify categories with client (what would customers search?)
- Check competitors’ categories for guidance
- Avoid unrelated categories (ex: plumber shouldn’t list “restaurant”)
If Category Error:
- Can edit categories anytime after verification
- Update to correct primary category
- Audit and trim secondary categories
- Changes may take a few days to reflect
Pitfall 7: Verification Failure
Section titled “Pitfall 7: Verification Failure”What Causes Failure:
- Using email without verifying it beforehand
- Providing wrong phone number
- Phone line can’t receive calls/texts
- Code expires before entered
- Postcard address doesn’t receive mail
- Multiple rapid verification attempts (triggers security block)
How to Avoid:
- Verify phone/email is active BEFORE starting verification
- Have IT/client confirm phone can receive calls
- Be ready for call with pen/paper (code reading important)
- If code expires, request new code (can do multiple times)
- Don’t spam verification attempts
- For postcard, double-check address is correct before sending
If Verification Fails:
- Wait 24 hours before retrying
- Try different verification method
- Confirm phone/email/address is correct
- Contact Google support if stuck after multiple attempts
- Video verification is good backup option
Pitfall 8: NAP Inconsistency & Duplicate Profiles
Section titled “Pitfall 8: NAP Inconsistency & Duplicate Profiles”What Happens:
- Google creates separate profiles for “Joe’s Plumbing” and “Joe’s Plumbing Inc”
- One profile has correct address, other doesn’t
- Phone number variations create confusion
- Rank visibility split across multiple profiles
- Reviews scattered across duplicates
How to Avoid:
- Complete NAP audit BEFORE creating GBP
- Ensure consistency across website, email, business registration
- Use exact same business name everywhere
- Standardize phone format everywhere
- Check for existing profiles before creating new
- Use BrightLocal citations to verify NAP consistency
If NAP Duplicates Found:
- Identify all duplicate profiles
- Claim most complete/accurate one
- Merge duplicates through GBP Manager if option available
- Request removal of old duplicate profiles
- Update all citations to point to correct profile
- Monitor for new duplicates (may re-form if citations point to old data)
Tools & Platforms Used
Section titled “Tools & Platforms Used”| Tool | Purpose | When Used |

Troubleshooting & Support
Section titled “Troubleshooting & Support”Common Questions
Section titled “Common Questions”Q: How long does verification take? A: Phone verification (5 min - 1 hour), Email (immediate - 24 hours), Postcard (5-10 business days), Video (1-3 days). Instant verification is immediate if eligible.
Q: Can I change business address after verification? A: Yes, but changing address may trigger re-verification. For SAB service areas, can be changed anytime.
Q: What if I chose wrong GBP type (SAB vs. Storefront)? A: Cannot be changed after creation. Must create new profile with correct type. Recommend deletion of incorrect profile after verifying new one has all data.
Q: How often should NAP be checked? A: During initial setup (required), then quarterly spot-checks, and after any business information changes (moved address, changed phone, name change).
Q: Can I manage multiple locations from one account? A: Yes. Each location gets separate GBP, but all connected to same Google account. Search Atlas can manage multiple profiles from dashboard.
Q: What if verification code expires? A: Postcard codes expire after 7 days. Phone/email codes expire within hours. If expired, request new code. Can retry multiple times. Wait 24 hours between failed attempts.
